well…almost.

This W editorial from the November 2010 issue really caught my eye. At first I thought it was because Irina Lazareanu was in it, her face always gets me. Then I realized that it was shot by Alex Prager, a photographer who I had blogged about a month or so ago  here. Hey – at least I’m consistent in my tastes! Anyways, it’s awesome and I wish more editorials were this good.

Tonight I went to the Annenberg Space for Photography’s weekly IRIS Nights, a free event in which prevalent photographers present and discuss their work.

Aaron Huey, the photographer of the evening, has always been an artist – he studied painting and holds a MFA degree in stone sculpture and printmaking. In 2002, he decided to walk across America with his dog Cosmo.  Huey walked a staggering 3,349 miles across the great big USA and documented his entire trip on a simple Leica camera.

Huey presented the audience with a slide of his pre-journey thoughts, which he displayed as a complicated web diagram of words such as fear, hope, money, sex, whisky, fancy cheeses…the list goes on.The journey was not about creating a final product, instead Huey desired to cleanse his mind and the walk was his means for meditation.

Huey desired to let go of the concept of an end goal. He wanted to reach a state that was entirely in the present and governed by the motto “Me.Here.Now.”

The entire trip lasted 154 days. The unexpected kindness of strangers resulted in Huey‘s total expenses adding up to a measly $200  – he slept safely in the homes of kind citizens five days a week, which also conveniently allowed him to build a tremendous portfolio of raw, uncalculated photos of an America buried deep below the surface.

However, Huey’s most captivating photographs of tonight’s event came from his ongoing visits to the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota.  What was first a commissioned project has now turned into a personal obligation for Huey to share the pain felt by the occupants of this neglected reserve.

Pine Ridge has an approximate unemployment rate of 90% and the average life expectancy for males is 46, comparable to that of Afghanistan and Somalia. There is no library and no hotel in this destitute reserve and the high school dropout rate is close to 70%.

Huey has travelled around the globe which makes it all the more unsettling to hear that of all the war-stricken and impoverished places he has travelled to, the most suffering he has ever witnessed lies right here in America, in Pine Ridge.

On Saturday, October 30th, Anastasia, Jaelem and I visited the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for their annual Dia De Los Muertes Festival.  The dead were celebrated with traditional Mexican dances, beautiful alters and fabulous food – see above for Papusas and Horchata .

We decided to take some photos atop the gravestones that lined the entire celebration. Leave it to Hollywood to use their neighborhood cemetery as a festival venue.
